Changes to the structure of policing in the region are once again in the air. In the past, most towns had their own force but over time the trend has been for amalgamations. The present structure dates from the time of local government reorganisation in 1974.
The two maps, both based on the historic county of Yorkshire, show the pre-1974 police forces and the present ones.
