Ripon City Centre and Shops Described by Defoe as 'the finest and most beautiful square that is to be seen in England', the Market Square offers a mix of independent shops, major high street names and a modern arcade; plus an open air market every Thursday. Historical attractions include the Obelisk, the 16th Century timber framed Wakeman's House and an Edwardian Cabman's Shelter. Ripon Cathedral and Thorpe Prebend House A uniquely historical place for prayer and worship, as well as a vibrant and important centre of the local community and the arts, the Cathedral dates back more than 1300 years. Within its precincts Thorpe Prebend House provides an exciting 'Ripon in Wonderland' experience, offering the visitor an opportunity to explore the Cathedral's history, including links with St. Wilfrid, Lewis Carroll and Wilfred Owen (www.riponcathedral.org.uk).

Ripon Racecourse Records of horse racing at Ripon go back over three hundred years to at least 1664, though the current Boroughbridge Road course dates from 1900.

Fifteen days of exciting flat racing are staged at Yorkshire's Garden Racecourse, including three evening meetings during the summer (www.ripon-races.co.uk).

Ripon Canal and Marina Designed by John Smeaton in 1766, the recently restored canal is the northernmost point of the UK canal network. Providing leisure facilities for walkers, boaters and fishermen, with bird hides, nature walks and interpretation boards, it overlooks one of North Yorkshire's most important wildlife conservation areas.
